Global citizenship: Opportunities, Considerations & Trends

About this event

Global Citizenship: Opportunities, Considerations & Trends

In the past few years, interest in obtaining an alternative residence and/or citizenship has surged among HNW Americans who are seeking ways to mitigate risk, create opportunity and preserve their wealth and legacy during these unsettled times.

Joining us will be Leigh-Alexandra Basha, Partner McDermott, Will and Emery and Judi Galst, Managing Director Private Clients Henley & Partners.

Together they will:

  • Explain what investment migration is and the latest trends among Americans who are considering alternative residence and citizenship
  • Dive into the most popular programs one can pursue through investment as well as by ancestry
  • Discuss the tax considerations for Americans who may become tax residents outside of the US (and also considerations for those who may want to become US residents)
  • Address another common inquiry: How can I move money outside of the US and how should that be structured to be of greatest benefit to the client?

Leigh-Alexandra Basha, a Partner at McDermott Will & Emery in their Washington DC office, focuses her practice on domestic and international tax and estate planning. She counsels an affluent international client base on a wide range of sophisticated matters, including estate and trust administration, family wealth preservation, foreign trust planning, tax compliance, as well as business succession, expatriation, and pre-immigration planning. Leigh is co-head of the Firm’s Washington DC Private Client Practice Group. Leigh was an adjunct professor of wills, trusts, and estates at American University Washington College of Law. She lectures and has written extensively about international tax and estate planning issues, and is editor of A Guide to International Estate Planning: Drafting, Compliance, and Administration Strategies, Second Edition. Leigh is an ACTEC Fellow, a member of STEP and past-chair of the STEP Mid-Atlantic branch.

Judi Galst, a Managing Director Private Clients for Henley & Partners and the Head of their New York office, advises families and their trusted advisors on global opportunities for legal residence and citizenship by investment. Judi’s role includes developing and maintaining relationships with trust and estate attorneys, wealth management firms, family offices, and other intermediaries who advise wealthy and ultra-wealthy families and  individuals. She serves as an extension to the advisory services of many trust and estate attorneys in their support of clients who are interested in understanding opportunities for alternative residence and citizenship across the globe. Judi also works directly with prospective family and individual clients, assessing their needs and objectives and recommending appropriate citizenship and residence options.
